FOR OVERSEAS VISITORS, CLEARLY YOUR PASSPORT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA - HOWEVER, WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU CARRY YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC DRIVING LICENCE WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. IT DOES MAKE THINGS EASIER IF YOU ARE STOPPED FOR ANY REASON.
OWN MEDICAL CARE - The SUN / UV rays in South Africa are much stronger than in Europe and visitors are advised to use sun screen or even sun block for protection. Skin Cancer has become a serious concern in sun worshipping Cape Town.
Also poisonous snakes and spiders might be encountered in many places and blue bottle stings are quite common in summer.

Due to ongoing security measures at airports the only liquid allowed onboard an aircraft are those obtained in the Duty Free Area.
Allowances per person are -: 2 litres of Wine, 1 litre of Sprit, 200 Cigarettes, 50 cigars, 250g of Tobacco, 50 ml Perfume, 250 ml Eau de Toilette, New or used goods not exceeding R3000 in value. Cash not exceeding R5000.

VAT Refunds may be claimed back by foreign tourists / non residents on items being taken out of the country. You are required to have the original VAT Invoice, Passport, Flight Ticket, plus the items available for inspection. They must be presented at a VAT or Customs and Excise office. In Cape Town, there is a refund office in the V & A Waterfront, which is situated on the second floor of the Clock Tower Centre. In order to complete the paper work, you would need to produce all your invoices, passport as well as confirmation of flight details. The operating hours of this office are: Monday to Saturday 09h00am – 17h30pm; Sundays 10h00am – 17h30pm.
Or if you have time, at Cape Town Airport CPT or Johannesburg JHB, prior to departure and you are required to fill out a VAT refund control sheet (VAT255)
